Athletic Training

NOTE: Following careful consideration, the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health (KCH) has determined that it must suspend enrollment for the undergraduate concentration in Athletic Training.  Until further notice, students who will be admitted to Athletic Training as of spring 2010 will be the last admitted class. The Athletic Training degree is an area of study that prepares students to enter the athletic training profession. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, this athletic training education program includes classroom, laboratory instruction, and clinical field experiences designed to prepare entry-level Certified Athletic Trainers. Students in the program will be educated in the areas of: Injury Prevention and Risk Management; Recognition, Evaluation and Assessment of Injuries and Illnesses; Immediate Care of Injuries, Treatment; Rehabilitation and Reconditioning; Health Care Organization and Administration; and Professional Development and Responsibility.  Upon completion of this program of study students will be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and are eligible to apply for the Board of Certification national examination to become a Certified Athletic Trainer.

Requirements for Teacher Certification

Application to the Teacher Certification curriculum is made at the end of the sophomore year. Admission depends on meeting minimum grade point average requirements. In order to remain in good standing in this program and be recommended for certification, candidates are required to maintain UIUC, cumulative, and content area grade point averages of 2.5 (A=4.0), and a professional education grade point average of 3.0. Candidates should consult their advisor or the Council on Teacher Education for the list of courses used to compute these grade point averages. In addition, candidates must receive a B- or higher in KIN 360, 361, 362, 363, 364, and 460, and meet professional standards of scholarship, ethics, and responsibility as evaluated by the Physical Education Area of Specialization Committee.

In addition to the General Education requirements for all Kinesiology undergraduates, the teacher certification requirements for students in all curricula, and the Kinesiology core requirements, students pursuing certification to teach physical education (K-12) must include the following courses in the elective kinesiology, correlate area studies, and free electives areas:
