Graduate Degree Programs

The Department of Educational Organization and Leadership offers degrees in two areas of specialization with various curricular options within each. Our programs in Educational Administration and Leadership (EAL) prepare students for career positions such as building-level leadership, central office administration, education policy analysis, scholarly research, and the professorate. The programs in Higher Education (HE) prepare current and future administrators, educators, and researchers in all phases of the field of higher education. Both specializations offer masters, certificate of advanced study, and doctoral degrees. The Educational Administration and Leadership specialization also offers state licensure requirements for the General Administrative Endorsement and Superintendent Endorsement. The Educational Administration and Leadership Ed.M. and C.A.S. degrees with General Administrative Endorsement are offered on the Urbana-Champaign campus and in the Chicago region. Individuals interested in Higher Education can pursue masters', certificate of advanced study, and doctoral degrees on the Urbana-Champaign campus. The Ph.D. programs are offered only for full-time students on the Urbana-Champaign campus, while Ed.D. programs are being offered in cohort fashion both in Urbana-Champaign and in Oak Brook, IL. The online Ed.M. degree in focused on P-20 Educational Leadership and Policy and encompasses coursework from both the EAL and HE program areas. Although students may not earn a Graduate Concentration with the online degree, they do have an opportunity to specialize in either EAL or HE.

Admission

Applicants should consult the department website for more detailed information and should apply online at www.ed.illinois.edu/eol/admissions/howtoapply/. The online application package requires a statement of purpose, current resume, and three letters of recommendation (which may be submitted either online or separately). Applicants for Educational Administration and Leadership are also required to complete the online personal information form. Doctoral candidates being considered for admission may be invited for an interview (which may, in some cases, be conducted by phone) and also will be asked to complete (or submit) an additional writing sample. GRE scores are required for admission to the Ph.D. program, but not for the Ed.D. program. International students must submit TOEFL scores unless they have a previous degree from a recognized U.S. university. The Department does not have an official cut-off score, although the score is used as part of the overall information considered. International students also are required to submit a declaration of financial ability to support themselves through their program of studies.

Off-Campus Programs

The EOL department offers selected off-campus programs in the Chicago region, through the use of a cohort model. The Ed.M. and C.A.S. degree options with General Administrative Endorsement are offered at Oak Brook, IL and in the city of Chicago. Two Ed.D. degree cohorts also are available at Oak Brook: Community College Executive Leadership and Superintendent Endorsement. Students enrolled in the Oak Brook Ed.D. program also attend selected classes on the Urbana-Champaign campus. Requirements for the off-campus Ed.M., C.A.S., and Ed.D. programs are identical to the on-campus degrees.

Online Program

This Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Policy represents a unique opportunity to gain a P-20 perspective, with an enhanced policy focus on issues related to educational organizations. This program strives to develop primary, secondary, and postsecondary educational leaders, administrators, and policy analysts who seek to understand and address critical P-12 and higher education issues. Students will study different educational leadership and policy practices and theories with particular focus paid to educational access, equity, and excellence. Because this program provides shared perspective on both EAL and HE program areas, Graduate Concentrations are not offered with the online degree. However, students will have the opportunity to specialize in P-12 leadership and policy or in higher education and policy. This program does not provide administrative licensure.

Medical Scholars Program

The Medical Scholars Program permits highly qualified students to integrate the study of medicine with study for a graduate degree in a second discipline, including Educational Organization and Leadership. Students may apply to the Medical Scholars Program prior to beginning graduate school or while in the graduate program. Applicants to the Medical Scholars Program must meet the admissions standards for and be accepted into both the doctoral graduate program and the College of Medicine.  Students in the dual degree program must meet the specific requirements for both the medical and graduate degrees. On average, students take eight years to complete both degrees.  Further information on this program is available by contacting the Medical Scholars Program, 125 Medical Sciences Building, (217) 333-8146 or at www.med.illinois.edu/msp.

Facilities and Resources

Each student completing a degree program in the EOL department is assigned a graduate advisor, who is available to assist the student with planning the program of study and determining degree requirements, courses, and timelines for degree completion.

The College of Education also has many resources to assist graduate students through their academic career. The Bureau of Educational Research works with students to secure research funding and provide human subject reviews. Educational Career Services assists with job placement in educational-related settings. The Council on Teacher Education certifies candidates, provides accreditation of professional education programs; and supervision of pre-service field experiences. The Chief Information Office provides technical support, equipment checkout, and an Instructional Computing Lab. The Thesis Format Office assists students in the formatting of their thesis or dissertation for degree completion.

Financial Aid

Financial aid in the form of assistantships, scholarships, fellowships, and tuition waivers can be found throughout the college and campus. There are opportunities available through the department, the College of Education, and the Bureau of Educational Research. Campus opportunities can be found at the Graduate College and the Office of Student Financial Aid.
