Admissions

The general admission requirements and procedures of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are outlined in information available from the Office of Admissions. See links for all prospective students (first-year, transfer, non-degree) at www.las.illinois.edu/students/admission/.  Information for Illinois students considering intercollegiate transfer to the College of LAS is available at www.las.illinois.edu/students/admission/intercollegiate.

The high school subjects required for first-year admission indicate the minimum preparation expected for most students. The college nonetheless urges prospective students to build on these requirements whenever possible. In the study of foreign language, for example, successful completion of four years of a single language in secondary school will satisfy the College of LAS graduation requirement in foreign language, suggesting that students should include as much foreign language as possible in their secondary school program. In addition, admissions to certain majors is highly competitive, with rigor, honors, and advanced work in high school contributing both to a strong admissions portfolio, and to student success in these fields at Illinois.

Advising

Academic advising is a critical resource for students in developing their program of study and making full use of the resources available which support student academic success. Students begin their relationship with advisors during Summer Registration in planning their first term course schedules.  All students in LAS have academic advisers within their major departments, with the exception of certain interdisciplinary majors advised at the college level. The college advisors, assistant deans, and the associate dean in LAS Student Academic Affairs assist students in handling a variety of problems and questions. See www.las.illinois.edu/students/advising/college/ for college-level services; see www.las.illinois.edu/students/advising/declared/ for links to departmental advising services.
