Environmental Studies

Environmental Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences takes place in several units.  The School of Earth, Society, and Environment (SESE) manages the Earth System, Environment, and Society major, a flexible interdisciplinary program that allows students to construct programs that address both the social science and natural science aspects of the environment (See ESES).  SESE also sponsors the Environmental Fellows Program which provides an opportunity for students to construct a minor that incorporates courses related to environmental studies.  The Department of Geography sponsors the Physical Geography and Environmental Geography Options-see Geography. The Department of Geology sponsors the Earth and Environmental Science Option-see Geology. The Department of Chemistry sponsors the Environmental Chemistry Option-see Chemistry.

Environmental Fellows Program (EFP)

You have heard about climate change, loss of biodiversity, diminishing resources, worries about sustainability, the energy crisis, and the impact of globalization- but do you understand the back story behind such environmental headlines? Do you want to establish the foundation for a career that can make a difference in our planet’s future? At the University of Illinois, the answer is yes. Join the Environmental Fellows Program (EFP) undergraduate minor and gain the skills and knowledge that can help you make a difference!

EFP is an undergraduate minor open to students in all majors. In EFP, you will start by taking courses on environmental fundamentals, many of which will probably count towards your general education requirements or your major. Then you finish with workshops designed to let you bring your expertise to the table and couple it with the expertise of others in order to increase your understanding of and perhaps come up with solutions to real environmental challenges. You will also have the opportunity to delve more deeply into a special topic - be it wildlife, human behavior, toxicology, advertising, poetry, geology, biology or engineering- through an EFP Capstone Experience. This is your chance to pursue a passian- and get credit for it.

For admission to the Environmental Fellows Program, student must:

? Be enrolled in any undergraduate degree program at the University of Illinois
? Submit an application during the fall or spring application period
?  Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
?  Have 3 or more semesters remaining on campus (or approval from the School of Earth, Society, and Environment)
?  Have application approved by selection committee

To complete the Environmental Fellows Program, students must complete 18 hours of classes from selected areas (See below).
