Curricula Preparatory to Teach Foreign Languages
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers curricula for the preparation of teachers of French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish and concentrations in East Asian Languages and Cultures for the teaching of Japanese and Mandarin Chinese.
Illinois law and Council on Teacher Education policy require that all candidates for admission to a teacher preparation program pass the Illinois Certification Testing System test of Basic Skills prior to admission. Illinois law and Council on Teacher Education policy require that all candidates for certification in Modern Languages pass an oral proficiency test in their content major language prior to student teaching.
A student must have at least 2.5 (A+ = 4.0) cumulative and University of Illinois grade point averages to remain in the teaching option. A student must also maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average in all attempts at content area and pedagogy courses taken at the University of Illinois in order to remain in the teaching option.

Prerequisite to application to the Teaching Option
GPA or 2.5 in all content courses in the intended majors of French, German, Latin, Spanish, Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures (Chinese and Japanese); completion of or concurrent enrollment in HUM 471 and three courses at the 200-level or higher in the intended language. Completion of Basic Skills Test.
General Education Requirements: Students in the Foreign Language Teaching Curricula of French, German, Latin, Russian, Spanish and in the East Asian Languages and Cultures Concentration Preparatory for the Teaching of East Asian Languages will be expected to complete the LAS General Education Requirements as well as following specific programmatic requirements:
- Communication: RHET 105 or 108 and CMN 101 or a speech performance elective, and one course approved by the university as satisfying the Composition II requirement. Alternatively, students may complete CMN 111 and 112 and one course satisfying the Composition II requirement. NOTE: Some departments specify particular courses within their major to satisfy the Composition II requirement.
- American History: One course (LAS Historical and Philosophical Perspectives Category)
- American Government: One course (LAS Social Sciences Category)
- Literature and the Arts: One course chosen from the LAS Literature and the Arts Category that is outside the student's major area.
- A course in health and physical development is recommended.
