Minor in Informatics

The Minor in Informatics will teach you to become a better creator and user of computing technology in your major area and to think critically about new technology's role in society. No other field has, and will have, a greater influence on humanity in our generation.

A Minor in Informatics is something you can use no matter what your major. Because Informatics leverages new technology to solve problems, to give expression to human ideas, and to connect people with one another, it applies to practically every discipline - from science, engineering, and business to the humanities and social sciences. The World Wide Web, wireless devices, and social networks are transforming the human experience, leaving in its wake a great need for individuals who not only know how to integrate these new technologies into the workplace but who also understand their impact on individuals and society.

Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply to the Minor in Informatics, preferably by the end of sophomore year. Although there are no prerequisites, basic familiarity with computers is expected.

To receive the Informatics Minor students must:

  • Submit an application, preferably by the end of sophomore year.

  • Have basic familiarity with computer use for word processing, email, and search. Speak with the Informatics Advisor if you need help determining whether you have the necessary skills or for advice on acquiring these skills should you lack them.

  • Complete three core INFO courses: Informatics 102, which covers the foundations of computer and information technology; Informatics 103, which teaches computer programming as the universal language of problem solving; and Informatics 202, which provides an understanding of the social contexts of information technology.
  • Complete three additional upper-level courses related to your own area of interest. These courses, which must be approved by the Minor, will generally fall into three areas: data and computation, social informatics, and digital expression.
