Graduate Degree Programs

The College of Business offers a degree program leading to the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in three delivery modes. The traditional full-time MBA and the part-time, evening MBA are offered on the Urbana campus. The Executive MBA is offered weekends in downtown Chicago. Joint professional degrees are offered with architecture, law, medicine, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, general engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, computer science, journalism, labor and insustrial relations, and education (human resource development).

Admission

Admission to the Illinois M.B.A. is dependent upon an earned undergraduate degree, acceptable scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), three letters of recommendation, and essays. The average GMAT score for the fall 2005 M.B.A. class was 647; the average GPA was 3.4 (A = 4.0). Applicants whose native language is not English are also required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

The full-time M.B.A. program begins in the fall semester only. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis beginning in January. Apply early to receive merit scholarships consideration.

The Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals begins in January only. Applicants must submit the same materials and information as the full-time MBA program. However, all applicants are expected to be employed full-time while pusuing the degree. Admission decisions are made as soon as the application is complete.

The Executive MBA begins a new class cohort each September in Chicago. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis beginning on January. Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of full-time, professional work experience to be considered for the program.

Master of Business Administration

The Illinois M.B.A. curriculum consists of 72 credit hours and features an integrated core of 40 credit hours. Students select a concentration from the following options: finance, general management, information technology, marketing, or operations management. The Illinois M.B.A. emphasizes co-curricular activities designed to complement classroom experiences while further developing leadership skills, including communications, teamwork, and self-awareness workshops, technical training in current computer software, and career services with a focus on internships and permanent placements.

M.B.A. students (aside from those participating in approved joint degree programs) must enroll on a full-time basis during the fall and spring semesters for the first two years of the M.B.A. During the summer, it is the expectation that all MBA students will have an internship.

The Part-Time Evening MBA for Working Professionals provides a general management curriculum and focus. The curriculum includes 72 credit hours that are completed over a two and a half year period. This program is designed especially for employed professionals who want to continue working while they pursue the MBA degree.

An Executive MBA program provides a general management curriculum focus and consists of 18 courses and 72 credit hours. The program culminates with an international study experience in which students consult on real business issues with international organizations and travel overseas to present their recommendations to these companies.

Joint Degree Programs

All joint degree programs require the completion of 60 credit hours of M.B.A. coursework, as well as the requirements of the other program. Students in joint degree programs must be registered as full-time M.B.A. students for a minimum of three semesters.

Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration

The J.D./M.B.A. program promotes careers in which administration and law overlap, such as corporate and trust law. For more information on the J.D. degree, contact the admissions officer at axxgrbs@uiuc.edu.

Master of Architecture and Master of Business Administration

Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration

Engineering Joint Degree Programs

Several programs have been created in response to a growing demand for electrical, industrial, mechanical, civil and environmental, and general engineers who are also professional managers: the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering/Master of Business Administration program, the Master of Science in Industrial Engineering/Master of Business Administration program, the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering/Master of Business Administration program, the Master of Science in General Engineering/Master of Business Administration program, and the Master of Science in Civil Engineering/Master of Business Administration program, and Environmental Engineering/Master of Business Administration program.

Master of Computer Science and Master of Business Administration

Master of Education and Master of Business Administration

This program was created in response to the growing demand for specialists in human resource education who also have an understanding of the management of projects, people, and resources. For more information, contact Human Resource Education/M.B.A. Program at lirle@uiuc.edu.

Master of Science in Journalism and Master of Business Administration

The joint Master of Science in Journalism/M.B.A. program permits students with an interest in business administration and print or broadcast journalism and management to earn both degrees. For more information, applicants should contact the Department of Journalism at bkj@uiuc.edu.

Master of Human Resources and Industrial Relations and Master of Business Administration

Financial Aid

The Illinois M.B.A. offers a limited number of merit scholarships to outstanding domestic and international applicants. The merit scholarships are awarded at the same time that admissions is offered. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible for federal and private student loans. International students may obtain private loans, without a US co-signer.
