EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES


The goal of this major is that the student gain an introductory knowledge of the civilizations of East Asia, competence in an East Asian language, familiarity with East Asian cultures through the disciplines of history and literature, and a more advanced knowledge of the region including research and writing in a seminar format. The major and minor, administered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, are useful for the student seeking a broad liberal arts education and preparation for graduate or professional study involving East Asia.

MAJOR IN SCIENCES AND LETTERS CURRICULUM

Degree title: Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences

Minimum required major and supporting course work normally equates to 50-54 hours.

General education: The LAS General Education requirements (see page 130) are set up so that students automatically complete the Campus General Education requirements. The exceptions to this are the Campus Composition II and the Western Cultures requirements which must also be completed.

EALC 170-East Asian Civilizations: China, Japan, Korea
One course on East Asia dealing substantially with the period before 1800
One course in East Asian history
One course in East Asian literature

Advanced courses:
EALC 298-Colloquium in East Asian Languages and Cultures
Three additional nonlanguage courses at the advanced (300) level

Twelve hours advanced level (300 or approved 200) courses in the major must be taken on this campus.

All foreign language requirements must be satisfied.

A Major Plan of Study Form must be completed and submitted to the LAS Student Affairs Office before the end of the fifth semester (60-75 hours). Please see your adviser.


1. No course may be counted more than once toward these requirements and at least two courses must be at 200-level or above.
