AFRICAN STUDIES
INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR IN AFRICAN STUDIES
The Center for African Studies offers an interdisciplinary minor as a complement to the major for any student enrolled in the Sciences and Letters Curriculum in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. A minimum grade-point average of 2.75 in African Studies courses is required for completion of the minor.
The 21 hours selected by students for the African studies minor should form a coherent program of study. This program must be approved by the Center for African Studies.
The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will verify that the student has completed the program on the recommendation of the director of the Center for African Studies and on completion of the requirements listed below.
HOURS REQUIREMENTS variable
Study of, or demonstration of competence in, a foreign language of pertinence to African language studies to the level of the LAS foreign language requirement. Languages such as Arabic, Bambara, French, Zulu, Lingala, Portuguese, Swahili, and Wolof are pertinent. A student who chooses to satisfy this requirement with an indigenous African language (e.g. Arabic, Bambara, Lingala, Swahili, Wolof, or Zulu) may count the second year of language study toward satisfaction of 6 of the total hours required for the interdisciplinary minor. 21
African studies core courses. These courses normally contain a minimum of 50 percent African content and are defined according to a list maintained and regularly updated by the Center for African Studies.
Courses include:
6 Maximum of six hours second year language study
9 Courses approved for advanced hours (300-level or approved 200-level courses).Courses from at least two separate departments in addition to those of the center 21
