Requirements: 50-54 hours
Language Courses. 26-30 hours of a single Asian language
Disciplinary and Period Courses. 12 hours
Advanced Courses. 12 hours
The goal of this major is that the student gain an introductory
knowledge of the civilizations of East Asia, competence in an East
Asian language, familiarity with East Asian cultures through the
disciplines of history and literature, and a more advanced knowledge
of the region including research and writing in a seminar format. The
major is useful for the student seeking a broad liberal arts education
and preparation for graduate or professional study involving East
Asia.
The major in East Asian Languages and Cultures consists of 50-54
hours, including 24 in nonlanguage courses, as follows:
1. Language (6 courses, 26-30 hours).
Majors must successfully complete Chinese (30 hours),
Japanese (30 hours), or Korean (26 hours) through the end of the
year.
2. Disciplinary and Period Courses (4 courses, 12 hours).
Majors must successfully complete nonlanguage courses as
follows:
a. EALC/HIST
170, for an introduction to East Asian civilizations;
b. one course on East Asian dealing substantially with the
period before 1800;
c. one course in East Asian history; and
d. one course in East Asian literature.
At least two of the four disciplinary and period courses must
be at the 200 level or above.
3. Advanced Courses (4 courses, 12 hours).
Majors must also successfully complete EALC
298 and three additional nonlanguage courses on East Asia at the
advanced (300) level.
No course may be counted more than once toward the
requirements of 2 (disciplinary and period courses) and 3 (advanced
courses) in the major.
